Irwin Alterman has been listed in Who’s Who in America since 1981, The Best Lawyers in America since 1987 (Commercial Litigation and Antitrust Law), Who’s Who in the World since 2005, and Michigan Super Lawyers since its creation. He has argued more than 15 cases in the United States 6th Court of Appeals and presented arguments before the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals.

The judges of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan presented him with a resolution in 1997 acknowledging his contributions. The State Bar of Michigan presented a special award to him in 1985 for his contributions to the practice of law.

The Michigan Supreme Court appointed him to a blue ribbon committee to fashion a court rule governing class actions. He served as a consultant on drafting the Michigan Court Rules and developing official court approved plain English forms.

He was chairman of the Antitrust Section, the Scope and Correlation (long range plan) Committee, and the founding chairman of the Plain English Committee.

American Law Institute
As a life member of this prestigious organization, he is entitled to vote on the adoption of all Restatements. He served as a member of the advisory group for the Restatement of Unfair Competition Law and Restatement 3d of Agency.

He is a past president and chaired the annual fundraising campaign for Michigan alumni for about 10 years.

Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
Since 1990 he has been a member of the Board of Governors. He also served as chair and as a member of numerous committees.

He served as the president of the Jewish Community Center and Adat Shalom Synagogue.

He has served on the boards of Hillel Day School, Holocaust Memorial Center, United Hebrew Schools, Jewish Vocational Service, Michigan Region BBYO, and on the National Executive Committee of the United Jewish Appeal Young Men’s Leadership Cabinet.

Books:

Plain and Accurate Style in Court Papers, published by ALI/ABA, has received widespread critical acclaim. The State Bar of Michigan distributed an earlier version to all 24,000 Michigan lawyers and judges.

Michigan Antitrust Digest – Federal and State, published by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education. The book topically indexes the antitrust decisions of the federal and state courts in Michigan. Mr. Alterman created the original book in 1975, and updated it by annual supplements and new editions through 2001. The book was sent to all members of the antitrust section of the State Bar of Michigan, and all federal judges in Michigan.

Other Publications:

He created Michigan Antitrust, a newsletter of the Antitrust Section of the State Bar of Michigan and wrote the newsletter from 1975 to 1992.

Mr. Alterman also created and co-authored a monthly article in the Michigan Bar Journal from 1982 to 1997 digesting the important recent decisions of the federal court in Detroit.

His earlier articles on Michigan trademark and covenant not-to-compete law were leading works in their fields, cited with approval by the Michigan appellate courts. He has lectured and written other articles on these subjects.
